-
- To all orphans of Reflex Plus, Reflex Mac, or Interlace:
-
- Borland abandoned us in August '88 when they stopped advertising ALL Mac
- products; it was just after Apple announced their ill-fated 30% price increase.
- At that time Borland was preparing to go public--just look at their stock price
- now. Borland certainly doesn't care that they've put us way out on a limb.
- Fortunately, this has nothing at all to do with the quality of Reflex Plus.
-
- The 8/7/90 issue of MacWeek reported a survey finding that 16% percent of Mac
- relational database users are using Reflex Plus--all with NO promotion in the
- last 2 years, AND with a heavy promotion of many other RDBM products of
- questionable suitability. Think what that percentage would be now if Reflex
- Plus
- were properly advertised, promoted and supported by an interested software
- developer-publisher, instead of being abandoned.
-
- You've probably noticed that there are NO good migration paths, unless you're
- taking this as an opportunity to become a developer of another RDBM, and don't
- mind abandoning your time invested in Reflex Plus. But many Reflex Plus users
- have invested hundreds of hours in templates to run their businesses--who wants
- to replace that effort? And Reflex still has several [unique] features you will
- miss if you switch. These are the practical reasons to see Reflex supported.
- Most users apparently don't want just to write this DBM off until it stops
- working due to some unavoidable system upgrade. Normally people will abandon
- Reflex Plus if support doesn't come from the publisher (note Borland's
- shrinking
- presence). But maybe Reflex Plus is NOT lost yet!
-
- We want Reflex Plus users know that an Organized Help Forum is NOW available. A
- group of experienced Reflex users and consultants, who think it's just too good
- a DBM to abandon, have formed the Reflex Plus Orphans Association (RPOA). We
- refuse to go down without a fight! Our approach--provide support so that users
- can live with the (temporary, we hope) orphan situation, and look for a
- publisher to take over Reflex Plus. We believe that if developers- publishers
- know there's still great interest in the product with many users still loyal,
- they will acquire the rights and give Reflex Plus the marketing and attention
- it
- deserves. That's where you come in. Success probability--unknown, but not
- zero.
-
- Here's what we've done so far:
-
- 1. We got your name and E-Mail address as a Reflex user (and over 230 more to
- date) and we are sending you this.
-
- 2. We've tested Reflex Plus on System 7.beta. (It still works, but we are wary
- of further changes and the need for more extensive testing.)
-
- 3. We're uploading the Borland support files to America Online and we have
- established a folder and an E-Mail chain there for dialog, tips, etc.
-
- 4. We've tracked down some of the original developers to see if they are
- interested in further work on Reflex with a better sponsor.
-
- Here's what our group is planning next:
-
- 1. We're trying to find a publisher to buy out Reflex Plus--one that will have
- greater fidelity to support and further develop the product than Borland did.
- We're using your responses from these contacts to develop our sales pitch, and
- that's where you can help us.
-
- 2. After we collect your interest data from this E-Mail campaign, we'll
- publicize our efforts and results in the trade magazines. This will attract
- marketers' attentions and let them know that lots of Reflex potential is still
- out here.
-
- 3. We will support each other by sharing tips and experiences, solving our
- Reflex problems, making available Reflex support files and example templates.
- You're invited to participate in that (it's our favorite group activity). When
- we get a publisher, this Special Interest Group will have excellent input to
- the
- development team. Now we've headquartered at America Online, but we're not
- making that a constraint. So you can get that manual back out and start
- sprucing
- up those templates-and challenge us!
-
- 4. We may need to establish a newsletter--electronic or paper--to keep everyone
- abreast of RPOA happenings, for a while at least. You're now on our list. If
- this thing takes off, we'll consider forming a more formal SIG for Reflex Plus
- users.
-
- How you can help us to reincarnate Reflex Plus:
-
- First, supply us by E-Mail with your Name, Address, and Comment supporting
- Reflex for use in our pitch. If you want to join with us, also request that,
- and
- we'll give you the particulars. You may join our efforts to find and convince a
- publisher, developer, investor, etc.; we'll give you more of the particulars
- about what we know, and we'll discuss how you may help. If you already have
- ideas on its reincarnation, please let us hear them; we'll take it from there,
- or you can join us in our promotion. Any additional help you would like to
- contribute to RPOA will be a voluntary investment you control. Again to get
- this
- started, give us your Name, Address, and Comment supporting Reflex Plus.
-
- Finally:
-
- We can work together to achieve these goals, but we need your help to set up
- this partnership. We need a high return rate, so let's send in that E-Mail.
-
- Thank you for your attention.
